Childcare in the 21st Century

There is a surprising difference with childcare in 2007 than what was considered acceptable just fifteen or twenty years ago. The emphasis has changed from simply caring for a child into one of a productive atmosphere in which the child is given a head start on his or her education. Children are expected to know far more than their alphabet song by the time they reach school age.

Child care centers, in many people's minds, involves a child being checked into an institution-like building and getting to play with other kids all day. The kids watch television, eat snacks and maybe finger paint a bit. This image may have been the standard in childcare ten or fifteen years ago, but today's parents are expecting much more for their money. If they are willing to pay out hundreds of dollars each week, per child, they want to know the child is receiving an education as well as being taken care of each day.

Some of the extra services that childcare in higher quality centers offer, can range from organic meals, foreign language education, computer instruction and even mathematics. Most children are expected to have knowledge of the basics, such as the alphabet and beginning numbers, by the time they reach elementary school. Studies have shown that the earlier a child begins learning the fundamentals, the more likely they will be to excel when reaching school.

Childcare in most major cities must offer more than their country counterparts. Parents are willing to pay for higher education for their toddler and want only the best. To that end, preschools are beginning to offer advanced studies. If you think that is placing too much of a burden on such a young child, when they should be playing, think again. Most public and private schools require a five year old to be able to recite numbers up to at least twenty-five and know the entire alphabet. Kindergarten teachers are expected to instruct children on reading at five years of age. It is no wonder parents are willing to pay such huge daycare fees in order for childhood to be filled with education.

The childcare in our past, of which most are familiar with, is no longer what current parents want. Playing outside is still a part of the child's day but the rest is filled with educational activities designed to give children an edge when it comes time to go to school. Is it too much? That is still a matter of debate. The school systems must stay abreast of current world trends in education and we do want our children to have the best education possible. The answer is to start younger and younger.
